nuvve nuvve 20 years

Nuvve Nuvve — the romantic comedy film that marked the directorial debut of screenwriter Trivikram Srinivas —turned 20 on Monday, 10 October.

Thanks to his stories, which are inextricably intertwined with humour, witty dialogues, and repartee, Trivikram became popular in the Telugu film industry as “Maatala Maantrikudu” (Wizard of Words).

And Nuvve Nuvve helped him carve a niche for himself in the industry as a director as well.

Starring Tarun, Shriya Saran, and Prakash Raj, the movie not only won rave reviews but also set the cash registers ringing at the box office.

It ended up bagging two Nandi Awards — Best Feature Film Silver (producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore) and Best Dialogue Writer (Trivikram) — and a Filmfare Award South (Best Supporting Actor for Prakash Raj).

Back then, little did Trivikram know that he would become one of the most sought-after directors in Tollywood.

Scintillating performances

While Tarun was already popular as a “chocolate boy”, the happy-go-lucky youth from a middle-class family (Rishi) that he essayed in Nuvve Nuvve struck a chord with the youngsters of those times.

His “Amma, Avakaya, Anjali… eppudu bore kottavu… (one can never get bored of mom, mango pickle, and Anjali)” dialogue became a sensation and is still quoted by movie buffs.

Shriya, who was just three films old then, stole the show as Anjali — the doting daughter of millionaire Viswanath played by Prakash Raj.

The film propelled her career forward and subsequently paved the way for her to join the big leagues of actors in Tinseltown.

Prakash Raj as a caring father of a sweet, innocent daughter tugged at the heartstrings with his emotive performance.

It won’t be an exaggeration if one says that every girl dreamt of having a father like Prakash Raj after watching Nuvve Nuvve; no wonder why he won the Filmfare award.

Hit music album

The soundtrack by music director Koti became an instant hit.

Niddura pothunna raatirinadigaa…”, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, is quite a popular number.

I’m very sorry…”, rendered by Kay Kay, was inspired by international singer Shakira’s “Whenever Wherever”.

Interestingly, Trivikram also turned a playback singer for Nuvve Nuvve by lending his voice to a couple of lines in the “Comuterlu Mathsu Sainsu…” track.

Produced by Sravanthi Ravi Kishore under the banner of Sri Sravanthi Movies, the flick became relatable for many youngsters, thanks to the story. And the plot is still relevant and relatable.

The makers on Monday organised a special screening of Nuvve Nuvve where the entire cast and crew gathered and relived some good old memories.

Addressing a press meet, which was convened post-screening, actor Tarun recalled that he debuted with Nuvve Kavali (2000) for which Trivikram wrote the dialogues. “And for his (Trivikram) debut film, I was the hero.”

He added: “I’m glad to have been his first hero, and it is something I will always be proud of. Working with Shriya was a great experience. This is my first film with Prakash Raj garu, and I learnt a lot from him. Watching the film just brought back all the memories.”

Producer Sravanthi Ravi Kishore, who is known for making family entertainers, said: “It doesn’t feel like it’s been 20 years. Prakash Raj was the first actor we decided to have on board without a second thought. The film wouldn’t have been the same without him. Thanks Prakash! I’m glad that all of us met here today. Thanks to the audiences for showering the same love on us today as well.”

Thanking Ravi Kishore for giving him the opportunity to direct the flick, Trivikram said, “He believed in me like no one else. I was working as a writer for Nuvve Kavali when I narrated the Nuvve Nuvve storyline to him. He immediately gave me a token amount, which was my remuneration as a writer. He just gave the amount as advance and brought me here today. Thanks to Shriya and Tarun for being part of the film.”

Prakash Raj noted it is not easy for a writer to become a director.

“But Trivikram made it. He is an amazing writer. My character in the film was a hit only because of the dialogue. Even after 20 long years, I still remember how Trivikram explained the scenes to me. The film became a hit only because of his well-written script and execution. Glad to be part of this reunion today,” he said.

Shriya went down memory lane and shared a few experiences from the sets of Nuvve Nuvve.

“Now, while watching the film, Tarun and I were thinking of the day we were shooting in Switzerland. Trivikram sir was asking for ‘one more shot’, but we just couldn’t see anything behind us due to the heavy snowfall. And yet, we gave it our best. I still remember the delicious food served on the sets, thanks to Ravi Kishore garu!”
