Karnataka, Tamil Nadu top India’s per capita income in FY 2024-25

Synopsis: The Finance Ministry clarified that variations across states stemmed from differences in economic development, governance, and structural factors. However, the data reflected that Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were driving South India’s economic momentum.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu led the country with the highest per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) at constant prices, according to Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.

Replying to unstarred questions by Giridhari Yadav and Dinesh Chandra Yadav in the Lok Sabha, the minister, quoting Ministry of Finance and the National Statistical Office figures for the financial year 2024-25, said Karnataka reported a per capita NSDP of ₹2,04,605.

Tamil Nadu followed closely with ₹1,96,309. Haryana came third with ₹1,94,285, posting a decade-long growth of 55.4%.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh posted ₹1,87,912 and ₹1,41,609, respectively. The Union Territory, Puducherry, reported an NSDP of ₹1,55,533.

While Karnataka posted an NSDP growth of 93.6% from ₹1,01,858 in 2013-14, Odisha showed an impressive decade-long increase of 96.7% to ₹1,06,918 from ₹54,209, the highest in the country.

Growth wise, Telangana showed an increase of 85.3%, higher than Tamil Nadu’s 83.3%. These figures reflected a strong economic trajectory for both states over the past decade.

Per capita NSDP (at constant prices) for key South Indian states and Puducherry in 2024–25:

  • Karnataka: ₹2,04,605
  •  Tamil Nadu: ₹1,96,309
  •  Telangana: ₹1,87,912
  •  Andhra Pradesh: ₹1,41,609
  •  Kerala: Data for 2024–25 not available, but stood at ₹1,62,040 in 2023–24
  •  Puducherry: ₹1,55,533.

In terms of growth over the last decade (from 2014–15 to 2024–25):

  • Karnataka saw a 93.6% increase in per capita income
  • Tamil Nadu recorded an 83.3% rise
  • Telangana posted 85.3% growth
  • Andhra Pradesh witnessed a 78.9% increase
  • Puducherry: 32.8% growth.

“The Government has been committed to the objective of inclusive growth, as reflected in its commitment to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and has initiated several targeted schemes aimed at reducing poverty and inequality, ensuring social security, promoting income generation and livelihood opportunities, and improving the quality of life of vulnerable sections across the country,” the minister told the Lok Sabha.
