Advocate Prashant Bhushan on Thursday, October 15, defended calls for a change in government amid the protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over large-scale voter deletions and other electoral irregularities.
Stressing that “a regime change will happen,” Bhushan stated that seeking a change in government cannot be treated as a crime in a democracy.
Addressing a press conference alongside AISA president Neha Bora, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and other activists, Bhushan said, “This government keeps on saying this is the opposition’s operation for regime change…There will definitely be a regime change. We all want a regime change. Is there anything wrong with that?”
Noting that the BJP had previously led several protests demanding regime change, Bhushan questioned why the party is now questioning the opposition parties when they raise the same demand. He stressed that seeking a change in government is a constitutional right.
“Getting the regime change is every citizen’s constitutional right. That is why the Supreme Court had said that the sedition law made by Britishers was unconstitutional, and that is why, until and unless violence or causing public disorder is not encouraged, only creating disaffection against the government is not an offence under our Constitution,” he said.
Flanked by RTI activist Anjali Bhardwaj and actor Prakash Raj, Bhushan stated that the ongoing protests are aimed at bringing about a regime change.
“Such a government cannot continue, which is hell-bent on crushing the electoral democracy in the country and continues to play with the fundamental rights of the citizens,” he said.
Earlier today, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari cited demands for regime change raised by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and AISA leader Neha Bora and alleged that their motive was “to destroy the Constitution and democracy within India.”
CJP leader Dipke, who also spoke at the presser, questioned the heavy deployment of security forces in Delhi and said the national capital has been transformed into something similar to the “India-Pakistan border.”
“You have brought Delhi to a standstill, shut down the Railways, shut down the Metro and turned Delhi into a border, like the India-Pakistan border. You have called in all the forces to Delhi,” he said.
He also alleged that the police used excessive force against the protesters, including the Opposition leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, and CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan.
