Former international cricket captains have written to the government of Pakistan, urging better physical, mental, environmental, and social treatment for the former Prime Minister and legendary cricketer Imran Khan, who is currently in jail.
Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Greg Chappell, Steve Waugh, Allan Border, Michael Atherton, Mike Brearley, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, John Wright, and Belinda Clark were the cricketers who appealed to Pakistan.
“As fellow cricketers who understand the values of fair play, honour, and respect that transcend the boundary rope, we believe that a person of Imran Khan’s stature deserves to be treated with the dignity and basic human consideration befitting a former national leader and a global sporting icon. We respectfully urge the Government of Pakistan to ensure that Imran Khan receives immediate, adequate and ongoing medical attention from qualified specialists of his choosing to address his reported health issues…”, the one-page letter read.

They also highlighted Khan’s contribution to cricket. “As captain, he led Pakistan to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory, a triumph built on skill, resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship that inspired generations across borders. He remains one of the finest all-rounders and captains ever, respected equally by players, fans, and administrators.”
Regarding his political contributions, they noted that he had led the country through challenging times. “Regardless of political viewpoints, he was democratically elected to the nation’s highest office, which deserves respect.”
The former cricketers asked Pakistani authorities to uphold decency and principles of justice, and emphasised the spirit of sportsmanship.
“Imran Khan has exemplified this spirit throughout his career. We appeal to the authorities honour this with fairness and humanity, without affecting any legal proceedings,” they said.
