Synopsis: Authorities in Bahrain have advised people to prepare emergency kits and move into closed rooms, away from doors and windows.
Iran has launched strikes on US bases in the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait in response to the Israel-US attacks on Tehran early on Saturday, 28 February.
One person of Asian origin was killed after debris from an anti-missile system fell on a residential area in Abu Dhabi, reports said.
AFP reported multiple loud explosions across Saudi Arabia, even as Iran vowed to retaliate against the US-Israel attacks.
Among the sites hit was the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in the Juffair area of Bahrain. A family from Kochi living in Juffair told South First that they were currently safe and advised by authorities to prepare emergency kits and move into closed rooms, away from doors and windows.
Meanwhile, with multiple countries imposing temporary airspace restrictions, international airports across Kerala have issued passenger advisories warning of possible disruptions to overseas travel.
Advisory to passengers
Cochin International Airport (CIAL) said that in view of recent airspace restrictions over the Middle East, certain international flights may be subject to delays, rescheduling or cancellation.
Passengers have been requested to verify the latest flight status with their respective airlines before proceeding to the airport.
Airport authorities said they are coordinating closely with airlines and relevant agencies to ensure smooth passenger handling during the disruption.
Kannur International Airport (KIAL) also issued a similar advisory, citing ongoing geopolitical issues and the closure of Iranian airspace.
Authorities said some international flights may be delayed or rescheduled.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport said that due to temporary closures and restrictions affecting multiple international airspaces, certain international flights may experience delays or rerouting.
Airport officials said the situation remains dynamic, and further updates will be issued depending on developments in West Asia and decisions taken by aviation authorities in the affected regions.
NoRKA helpline
Meanwhile, the Kerala government has launched a dedicated helpdesk to assist expatriates from the state.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, NoRKA Roots has activated a special helpdesk for Keralites currently residing in or travelling through the affected regions.
Keralites in need of assistance can register their details by contacting the NoRKA Global Contact Centre: +91-8802012345 or 18004253939.
It also advised Indian citizens in the region to strictly follow the instructions issued by the Indian Embassies concerned and the Ministry of External Affairs.
Flights suspended
In a related development, major airlines on Saturday announced sweeping flight suspensions to and from the Middle East amid escalating regional tensions and airspace restrictions, citing passenger and crew safety as their top priority.
Air India said that “in view of the developing situation in parts of the Middle East,” all its flights to destinations across the region have been suspended.
The airline said it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and will continue to assess the security environment and adjust operations proactively.
Air India has advised passengers to check their flight status on its website and contact its 24×7 call centres at +91 1169329333 and +91 1169329999 for assistance.
Support teams are being deployed to help affected travellers.
IndiGo also announced that, due to evolving airspace restrictions around Iran and parts of the Middle East, all flights to and from the region stand cancelled till 0000 hrs.
The carrier said it is closely monitoring the situation and recalibrating operations to minimise disruption. Customers have been urged to check their flight status before departure and opt for alternate travel options or full refunds if impacted.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways confirmed a temporary suspension of flights to and from Doha following the closure of Qatari airspace.
The airline said it is coordinating with authorities, has deployed additional ground staff at Hamad International Airport, and will resume services once airspace reopens, though delays are expected.
