As the layoffs continue, several Oracle employees are bracing for the worst.
One random morning, you wake up and try to log in to your company laptop. It shows that you no longer have access, which would normally be understood as a glitch and not an indication of termination from your job. But that’s how some employees at Oracle found that they had lost their jobs.
For the Oracle employees who found themselves logged out of their laptops and official accounts in the early morning of September 14, an official confirmation from the company came a couple of hours later.
According to Business Insider, some of these employees were unable to access official documents and their accounts from 4 am Eastern Time. The Slack accounts were disconnected between 5 and 5:30 am. An official email from the company notifying their termination came only after 6 am.
The company stated that the decision was taken as part of a wider organisational restructuring.
“After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organisational change…As a result, today is your last working day,” the email read.
The email also informed that the employees would be eligible for severance pay after the completion of formalities.
According to Moneycontrol, the layoffs began with employees based in the United States on September 14 and extended to Indian employees on September 15.
Several employees, especially those working in product engineering, reported receiving termination letters on Tuesday, September 15. The latest round of layoffs is expected to affect nearly 3000 employees in India, according to early estimates.
Earlier this year, Oracle had revealed that it cut 21,000 jobs over 12 months until May 31 and reduced its workforce by 13 per cent. According to reports, the total number of layoffs at the company stood at 30,000.
The series of layoffs at Oracle came as the company continued to put a large amount of money into Artificial Intelligence infrastructure.
According to Business Insider, Oracle’s capital expenditure in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 reached $28.5 billion. That was more than three times the $8.5 billion spent during the corresponding period a year earlier.
However, employees at the company view its focus on AI as a sign of “greed” and a cause of its “lack of empathy.” As the layoffs continue, several Oracle employees are bracing for the worst.
