The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched India’s first-ever Earth imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit. Satellite EOS-05 was launched by a GSLV rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota at 2:55 am on Friday, September 4.
In a post on X, ISRO announced the success of the mission and informed that the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) placed the EOS-05 into the intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).
“Mission Success! GSLV-F17 has successfully accomplished its mission, placing EOS-05 into the intended orbit,” the post said.

The EOS-05 satellite, weighing 2367 kg, is India’s first-ever imaging satellite to monitor Earth from the Geosynchronous orbit, about 36,000 km above.
In a statement on Friday, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan called the mission a “great achievement” for India’s space programme. He announced that the satellite is in “perfect health” and has been precisely injected into the intended orbit.
“I am very happy to announce that the GSLV-F17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced Earth observation satellite EOS-05, the Geo Imaging Satellite, into the intended and required orbit,” Narayanan said.
He confirmed that the satellite is in healthy condition, with all the valves operating perfectly and the solar panel deployed.
“In the coming days, we will raise the orbit and take it to the required orbit and place the satellite in the Geo platform for national activities,” he said.
Narayanan noted that this was the 19th mission of the GSLV rocket and 10th to be launched from Sriharikota.
“The first launch of the GSLV- D1 was done with a payload of 1536 kg; from that, we have gradually improved the performance of this vehicle by optimising the structural mass, improving the propulsion systems, and today we have injected the heaviest satellite, a 2367 kg satellite, using this launch vehicle,” he said.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the success of the mission “another outstanding achievement” by the ISRO and a “proud moment” for the country.
