Synopsis: The CJP said it is duty-bound to ensure that no eligible citizen is deprived of the right to vote and hence will support all organisations fighting for free and fair elections in the country. The Opposition rally is scheduled for 1 November at Ram Leela Maidan in Delhi.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Wednesday, 28 October, extended its support to the Opposition INDIA bloc’s 1 November rally, seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
This is the first time the CJP has openly endorsed the INDIA bloc’s protest against SIR. Senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi had earlier condemned the jailing of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Rana for seven days for reportedly breaching a peace bond.
“Gyanu must go. The Cockroach Janta Party extends its support to the INDIA Bloc’s November 1 rally,” CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke posted on X, along with a statement.
“Nation above all!” he added.
The rally is scheduled to be held at the Ram Leela Maidan in Delhi.
The statement said Kumar must resign to restore the Election Commission’s credibility and independence. The CJP said the SIR had undermined the principle of democracy that the voters elect the government, and not the other way round.
Invoking BR Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru, the CJP said the leaders brought “more citizens into democracy, not keep them out of it”.
Nehru, Ambedkar and other makers of the Indian Constitution “understood that democracy could only succeed when every citizen had an equal say in deciding the country’s future,” the CJP argued.
“Today, the SIR exercise has raised serious concerns about the removal of eligible voters from electoral roles. Instead of making it easier for citizens to exercise their voting rights, we are witnessing growing fears of exclusion,” the statement said.
Adding that the Constitution gave every adult citizen the right to vote, the CJP said, “It is our responsibility to ensure that no eligible citizen is deprived of that right. The Cockroach Janta Party will therefore support all organisations fighting for free and fair elections in our country.”
However, the statement did not specify whether the CJP leaders would join the rally.
