Eight Opposition members were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, 3 February, for the remaining period of the Budget session for alleged unruly behaviour, including throwing torn papers at the Chair.

The suspension came amidst disorderly scenes when the Lok Sabha reconvened at 3 pm after multiple adjournments.

The House adopted by a voice vote the resolution moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, which sought the suspension of the eight members for the remainder of the session ending on 2 April.

When the Lok Sabha reconvened at 3 pm. Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, named the eight members for misconduct in the House. The Speaker said the MPs breached parliamentary decorum.

Besides Congress MPs Hibi Eden (Ernakulam), Dean Kuriakose (Idukki), Manickam Tagore (Virudhunagar), Kiran Kumar Reddy (Bhongir), Prashant Padole (Bhandara-Gondiya), Amarinder Singh Raja Warring (Ludhiana), and Gurjeet Singh Aujila (Amritsar), CPI(M)’s S Venkataraman (Madurai) were suspended.

Congress protests against suspension

Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi led a protest against the suspensions outside Parliament. The protesters alleged that the government was using its majority to stifle discussions instead of resolving disagreements.

The Lok Sabha has been witnessing uproarious scenes since Monday, 2 February, after Gandhi insisted on quoting a part about the border tensions with China in 2020 from former Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Naravane’s unpublished memoir. On Tuesday, the Chair further disallowed the Opposition Leader from quoting the excerpts published in an English magazine.

Tension gripped the Rajya Sabha also after several Opposition members staged a walkout after their demand for a discussion on the Indo-US trade deal was denied.

The suspension of Opposition Lok Sabha members was a reminder of the 2024 Winter Session, when the Speaker suspended 146 MPs after a security breach in Parliament complex and the Ethics Committee’s expulsion of Mahua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress.
