Synopsis: At least 21 people, many of them African nationals, died in a fire at a Malviya Nagar building housing a restaurant and guesthouse in south Delhi. Officials fear the toll may rise; PM Modi announced Rs 2 lakh aid for victims’ families.
At least 21 people, many of them Africans tourists, have been killed in a deadly blaze that tore through a building in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday, 3 June.
The building housed a restaurant, Lemon Green, and Flourish Stay, a bed and breakfast, and is located near the Max Hospital in Saket.
Reports claimed that permission had been given only for six rooms, but 25 rooms had been built. As many as 40 guests, most of them foreigners, were said to be staying in the building.

Locals informed Fire-brigades reached “45 mins” late. Locals had to spread the mattresses to rescue foreign nationals.

The fire that broke out at 8:45 am has reportedly “been successfully extinguished with the assistance of eight fire tenders”. But police officials feared that the toll could rise as many of the occupants were asleep at the time of the accident.
Videos of people jumping out of the building to save themselves have gone viral.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condoled the deaths.
