Synopsis: BJP is set for sweeping victories in Assam and West Bengal. In Assam, the party has crossed the majority mark with over 80 seats, securing CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s third term. In Bengal, BJP leads in nearly 200 constituencies, putting Mamata Banerjee’s TMC on the defensive. These twin gains reshape regional politics and strengthen BJP nationally.

Early results from the Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal point to a dramatic shift in the political landscape, with the BJP consolidating its hold in the Northeastern state and making historic gains in Bengal.

In Assam, BJP-led NDA has crossed the majority mark of 64 seats, leading in over 80 constituencies.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is comfortably ahead in Jalukbari, while Congress state chief Gaurav Gogoi trails in Jorhat.

Congress-led alliance is ahead in just 23 seats in the state, with regional players like AIUDF and Raijor Dal showing limited impact. The trends suggest BJP is set for a third consecutive term in the state.

Meanwhile in West Bengal, BJP is leading in nearly 200 seats, well past the majority mark of 148, while the ruling TMC is ahead in around 90 constituencies.

Key contests show CM Mamata Banerjee trailing in Bhabanipur against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, who is also ahead in Nandigram. BJP’s gains extend into urban Kolkata, where it is leading in constituencies traditionally held by TMC.

Significance

In Assam, BJP’s dominance underscores its strong organisational base and alliance strategy.

In Bengal, the saffron party is on course to form its first-ever government, ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule.

Nationally, the twin victories strengthen BJP’s position ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, while Congress and TMC face major setbacks.
