Synopsis:The flash flood that struck the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited colony has triggered concern in nearby Assam too, where disaster management teams were placed on high alert.
One person was killed and four others missing in flash floods triggered by a sudden burst of rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district.
A press release by the Superintendent of Police of Keyi Panyor said the body of Nirmala Gupta had been recovered. The 35-year-old was working as a teacher and was in her house when the flash flood hit. Her husband and children were able to find their way to safety.
The duo of Balari Marak (30) and Elesh Marak (13), along with Tao Anjina (46) and Sourav Kumar were among those missing in the floods that struck the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) Colony in the district.
The Indian Air Force and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were involved in the rescue.
“A special drone unit has been deployed to assist rescue operations and monitor landslide clearance activities,” said Superintendent of Police, Keyi Panyor, Angad Mehta.
Around 20 houses in NEEPCO colony and the nearby Poosa village in the Yazali area were reportedly damaged. Yazali falls under Keyi Panyor (earlier part of the Lower Subansiri district).
“According to information received from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati and Meteorological Centre, Itanagar, Yazali station in Lower Subansiri district recorded about 72.8 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, with a major part of the rainfall occurring between 0600 hrs and 0900 hrs on June 24.
“Satellite and radar imagery indicate that torrential rainfall occurred between 0600 hrs and 0730 hrs, resulting in flash floods and a substantial increase in river discharge in the upper catchment areas,” an Assam government press release noted.
Teams of SDRF, NDRF and other emergency response agencies were placed on high alert in Assam too.
