Synopsis: A fire that broke out at around 3 pm in a building in Lucknow has claimed eleven lives. Many more remain trapped, with thick smoke adding to the difficulties rescue teams are facing.
A fire that broke out in a three-storey commercial building in northwest Lucknow has claimed 15 lives, according to reports.
The fire that raged through the complex—said to also house a coaching centre—on Usha Mehta Marg in Lucknow’s Aliganj was first reported at around 3 pm. An eyewitness told NDTV that the fire began on the top floor of the building and then spread.
Police and fire teams arrived at the spot of the accident a little later. Fourteen fire tenders and a hydraulic platform were said to have been employed to bring the fire under control.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also arrived at the spot and stayed on to supervise the rescue efforts.
“There is a library or a computer course institution there. When we reached the spot, we saw thick smoke billowing from the building. We managed to save 5-6 people. After the fire broke out, a man jumped from the building in panic and was seriously injured. There are still some people trapped inside,” an eyewitness named Aman told ANI.
Another resident spoke of what he saw.
“When I arrived at the spot, I saw smoke billowing from the building. Some students had already been rescued, and 4 to 5 students managed to come out of the building,” another Aliganj resident told PTI. “However, some are still believed to be trapped inside, though the exact number has not been confirmed. Our only hope is that everyone comes out safely. The firefighters took some time to reach the spot.”
Other reports spoke of five to seven students jumping out of the building in a bid to save themselves.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has shared his condolences and told officials to extend all possible help.
