YS Jagan Mohan Reddy

Even while a family feud over property inheritance is ongoing, YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy appears to have pulled himself together from his shocking defeat in the recent Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.

He is unlike his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao of the BRS who revels in the ecstasy of inaction.

Jagan Mohan Reddy has hit the roads and is managing to pull crowds. He recently went to Gurla in Vizianagaram district where hundreds of people have been admitted to hospitals after the outbreak of gastroenteritis.

Visiting people in distress

Earlier, he visited Badvel in Kadapa district where a girl was murdered. She was set on fire in bushes near the town by a youngster who allegedly belonged to the TDP.

In another instance, he announced ₹20 lakh help to the kin of the woman who was driven to end her life by social media trolls in Tenali who did not like her praising Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The former chief minister who faced a crisis of confidence has now recovered. He is doing what he is supposed to do — mix with people and expose the ruling TDP. However, the problem is that he is now a lone ranger. Most of those who adored him when he was in power are now trying to avoid him.

They do not want to be seen or known as YSRCP leaders anymore. They are just biding their time silently as they have no hope of finding their way into either TDP or Jana Sena where they are considered pariahs. They do not want to go into the BJP as they don’t see either strength or a future for the saffron party in Andhra Pradesh. They are stuck in a claustrophobic limbo of frustration.

The lone ranger

However, Jagan Mohan Reddy, even though no leader worth his salt is accompanying him, is going out on his own.

He is commiserating with those who are in distress, which is an opportunity for him to take the TDP’s guts for the garters.

Jagan Mohan Reddy claimed that if the government moved and its representatives called on the family of the Badvel victim, it was after he had announced his intent to visit them.

Similarly, he claimed that the government did not know of the Gurla gastroenteritis outbreak until he goaded the government into action by announcing publicly how the victims were suffering.

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s credibility is at its lowest ebb. The TDP has been working overtime in demolishing it mercilessly. He nonetheless is moving doggedly even though he has a flaming row with his sister over the sharing of family property.

Even though no one knows who is right in this spat, he is trying to ride out the storm of suffocating adversity.
