Tamil Nadu BJP is never short of drama, political intrigue or speculation. Despite never coming to power in the state, the party has consistently stayed in the political spotlight. Now, fresh buzz is building around one big question: Who will become the next Tamil Nadu BJP president?

From senior BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan to actor-turned-politician R Sarathkumar and Chennai-based party leader Vinoj P Selvam, party circles are discussing several names.

With talk of a possible leadership shake-up gathering momentum, the question is whether the BJP’s national leadership is preparing for a change at the top, and who could emerge as the frontrunner.

Leadership shake-up?

Speculation about a possible change in the Tamil Nadu BJP’s state leadership has been circulating since the 2026 Assembly elections.

Nainar Nagendran, who hails from Tirunelveli, currently heads the party’s state unit. However, BJP circles suggest the national leadership may consider replacing him and bringing in a new face to lead the party in Tamil Nadu.

While there has been no official announcement, the leadership question has fuelled considerable discussion within the party.

One name that has consistently featured in these conversations is Vanathi Srinivasan, a senior BJP leader and former MLA. Her name has been in contention for some time, making her a prominent figure in the ongoing speculation.

But she may not be the only contender.

Actor-turned-politician R Sarathkumar and Chennai-based BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam are also reportedly being discussed as possible candidates for the top post, according to party sources.

Selvam is said to be interested in taking up the responsibility and has reportedly conveyed his desire to the party leadership.

The possible contenders bring different political profiles to the table: Srinivasan represents the party’s established leadership, and Sarathkumar brings his public profile and political experience. At the same time, Selvam is associated with the party’s organisational activities in Chennai.

Still, a significant caveat remains to all this political chatter.

When asked for views, a senior party leader said the BJP had not made any official announcement about a change in state leadership or the appointment of a successor. Until the party itself confirms a decision, they maintained, the names circulating in political circles should be treated as speculation.

Adding another layer to the intrigue is L Murugan, the former Tamil Nadu BJP president who recently stepped down from his Union Cabinet post.

A theory circulating in political circles suggests that Murugan may have relinquished his ministerial position to focus on strengthening the BJP’s organisational presence in Tamil Nadu.

Who are Sarathkumar and Selvam?

Sarathkumar is a Tamil film actor and politician who has also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. He founded the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and later joined the BJP in 2024. His background in cinema and politics makes him a recognisable public figure in Tamil Nadu.

Selvam is a BJP leader from Chennai who has been involved in the party’s organisational and political activities in Tamil Nadu for nearly two decades. He joined the BJP in 2007 and served as the Tamil Nadu state president of its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), from 2016 to 2021. He currently serves as the BJP Tamil Nadu state secretary.

Interestingly, Selvam’s younger brother, P Rhevanth Charan, is associated with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and won the 2026 Assembly election from the Maduravoyal constituency in Chennai.
