Bandi Sanjay greeting K Kavitha.

A video clip being circulated on social media added credence to the saying that there are no permanent friends or foes in politics.

The video was recorded at the housewarming function of Baswapuram Laxminarsaiah, the BJP’s Nizamabad district president. Leaders from several parties attended the function.

More than the function, the event would be remembered for a rare bonhomie between two rival politicians, who had never missed an opportunity to belittle the other and draw political mileage.

In one such instance, the BJP’s Telangana state president made a comment that left the BRS seething in rage. Addressing a BJP Mahila Morcha meeting on International Women’s Day on March 8, Sanjay made a disparaging comment against BRS MLC K Kavitha.

Referring to an interaction with reporters, the BJP leader said if Kavitha is not arrested in the Delhi excise policy scam case, would she be kissed?

“They (the reporters) asked me whether Kavitha could be arrested. What will they do if not arrest her? Will they kiss her,” he asked.

The comment angered the BRS as a clipping of the speech went viral on social media. Its workers took out protest rallies and even burnt Sanjay in effigy. The state Women’s Commission, too, took cognizance and summoned the BJP leader for an explanation. He obliged.

On Wednesday, 31 May, both Sanjay and Kavitha seemed to have buried the past and moved on. Sanjay was at Laxminarsaiah’s house at BLN Gardens in Madhavanagar when the BRS leader walked in.

Kavitha and Sanjay exchanged pleasantries, and the BRS leader even introduced her party colleagues, Nizamabad urban MLA Bigala Ganesh Gupta and Zilla Parishad chairman Dadannagari Vittal Rao to Sanjay.

The interaction was brief, but warm and pleasant, suiting the occasion. One could hope that political rivals get enough platforms like Laxminarsaiah’s housewarming ceremony to meet and exchange greetings. It would go a long way in keeping the sanctity of political work in a thriving democracy.
