KV Rajendranath Reddy

For almost nine months now, senior IPS officer KV Rajendranath Reddy has been holding fort at the office of the Andhra Pradesh DGP — but only with Full Additional Charge (FAC).

The YSRCP government, in February, after shunting out the then DGP Gautam Sawang, gave intelligence chief Rajendranath Reddy FAC of the DGP office.

Though the government was to appoint a regular DGP, it has not done so yet.

There are at least half a dozen senior officers who are eligible to be the state DGP. But by giving Rajendranath Reddy FAC, the Jagan government has effectively bypassed all of them.

As per procedure, the government is supposed to send a list of probable names to the UPSC which, in turn, suggests three names from which the state government picks one.

The UPSC will, as far as is practical, choose people from within the zone of consideration who have two clear years of service left. It also gives due weightage to merit and seniority.

But nobody quite knows whether the government has even started the process of appointing a regular DGP.

Days after giving Rajendranath Reddy FAC of the DGP office, the government appointed ACB chief P Seetharama Anjaneyulu as the state intelligence chief.

Later, the state government gave charge of the ACB to Rajendranath Reddy in the place of Seetharama Anjaneyulu, while he continued to hold FAC as state DGP.

Which means Reddy now calls the shots in the entire police department and force.
