Markets are gathering places for people from different ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. They also are fertile grounds for gathering information.

On Tuesday, 15 August, a few people shopping for vegetables were surprised to see Telangana’s Finance Minister T Harish Rao “selling” vegetables at the Siddipet Rythu Bazaar.

Rao’s “vegetable business” came a day after it was announced that retail inflation jumped to 7.44 percent in July, primarily driven by costlier tomatoes and other vegetables.

Using the traditional weighing scale, he weighed the vegetables as the buyers paid him. The “surprise vendor” was on duty for a while.

Rao is known to mix with the people. On Tuesday, during his hectic programmes in the town, Rao suddenly decided to see the Rythu Baazar to check if the farmers were facing any problems.

He entered the bazaar with his retinue. Everyone expected that he would inspect the facilities and take the management to task if there were any deficiencies.

On the contrary, the minister sat with them and enquired about their day-to-day life. He sought to know if farmlands were getting adequate power supply. He spent time with several vendors, both young and aged, men and women. He also enquired with them if there was enough water in the lakes back in their villages.

Rao, the nephew of Chief Minister K Chandrshekar Rao, is one of the “top three” in the BRS and is a contender for the top job if KCR steps down to pursue his national ambitions. Unlike his uncle, he is a “man of the people” and is widely considered an accessible politician.
