Tamil Film Stars avoid Amit Shah

Wanting to make an impression on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai attempted to rope in top actors and personalities from the Tamil film industry to meet him on Sunday, 11 June. But it all went in vain as it was a no-show by the stars.

According to sources, Annamalai had assigned the task of getting film personalities on board to meet Shah to his trusted lieutenant Amar Prasad Reddy, and a few others. The state BJP unit was eager to show the party high command that they were favoured by many top, influential film personalities in the state.

Second-line leaders of the party had reached out to several male actors, including Sivakarthikeyan and Vishal, a few leading female actors, and even music composer GV Prakash, ahead of Amit Shah’s visit to Chennai.

However, most people from the film industry avoided the meeting, even though the BJP said it was a non-political event. Sources close to Sivakarthikeyan said the actor conveyed to the BJP leaders that he was in Kashmir shooting a film, while Vishal told them that he would not be available in the city on the specified date.

The BJP team managed to get music composer GV Prakash, director RK Selvamani (husband of Roja Selvamani who is the minister for tourism, culture and youth advancement of Andhra Pradesh), and director Rajashekaran to meet Amit Shah.

A BJP functionary told South First that every time Amit Shah visits Tamil Nadu, it is the political leaders who meet him. “But this time, the state BJP leaders wanted personalities from different fields to meet Amit Shah to show that the BJP high command has a warm welcome in the state,” he said.

He added, “When stars from the cinema field meet Amit Shah, it will spread widely among the public. Moreover, the film fraternity is now under the control of the DMK and most of them are not interested to face the heat of DMK high command by meeting the BJP leader. That’s the reason most of the film personalities are hesitant.”
