Governor Gehlot addressing the joint Houses of Legislative Assembly on Monday

Two months since the results of Karnataka Assembly elections put the Congress in government and BJP in the Opposition, the saffron party has still not been able to elect a Leader of Opposition (LoP).

In a first, the Governor’s address as well as the state budget was presented in the Assembly without a Leader of Opposition, what with the BJP remaining indecisive on its leadership of organisation in Karnataka as well as in the legislature.

Tired of being questioned about the delay in electing the LoP, BJP legislatures have turned their embarrassment into little jokes.

“We have one LoP every day. If Bommai is LoP today, Ashok will be LoP tomorrow, Yatnal will be LoP the day after tomorrow and Sunil Kumar the next day. Who knows? Even a newcomer could be given the position the following day,” said a BJP leader recalling a joke legislators shared in the Opposition party’s lobby in the Legislative Assembly.

It instantly reminded this reporter of a rolling trophy at sports events or the tiara in beauty contests that are passed on to different winners each year.

Another senior MLA seemed to have taken inspiration from political developments in neighbouring Maharashtra to crack a joke.

“Why waste time on LoP? We will simply pick a new chief minister,” laughed the BJP legislator while expressing his helplessness over the party delaying what should have been a seamless process.
