DK Shivakumar Mahakali temple

Sporting a traditional and colourful turban and a saffron shawl — with ‘Jai Shri Mahakal’ written on it — Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stood out among other leaders at the inaugural ceremony of the Shakti scheme at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Sunday, 11 June.

If he was looking to catch everyone’s attention, well he did.

Shivakumar was just back from a two-day visit to Madhya Pradesh, where he visited Baglamukhi’s Pitambara Peetha and Ujjain’s Mahakala Mandir and Kalabhairava temples on Saturday and Sunday, and offered prayers.

Shivakumar then flew straight back to Bengaluru to take part in the inaugural ceremony of Shakti scheme – which offers free travel to women in state transport corporations within Karnataka. It was the launch of the first of the “five guarantees” the ruling party had promised in the run-up to the 2023 Karnataka Assembly polls.

Commenting on his attire, Shivakumar told reporters: “I had been to Ujjain Mahakaleshwar, like millions of devotees, to offer prayers. I had visited this temple even before the Assembly elections.”

“I sought blessings from God to give us strength to implement all the five guarantees successfully. So that it benefits people of all communities, religions, and castes. Service of mankind is service to God,” Shivakumar added.

What he didn’t tell reporters is that he is set to play a vital role in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections and is keen on backing Kamal Nath as the face of Congress party.
