It seems the key to the mystery, of who Andhra Pradesh’s new Chief Secretary will be, is only one government order away.

Grapevine in Andhra Pradesh’s bureaucratic circles has it that senior bureaucrat KS Jawahar Reddy has won the race, beating out others to become the next Chief Secretary, a coveted post in the government.

Current chief secretary – who is seen as one of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s favourite officers and has been given two extensions so far – Sameer Sharma’s tenure is going to end in the next few days. A race was underway between KS Jawahar Reddy, Poonam Malakondaiah, Rajat Bhargava and Neerabh Kumar Prasad for the top post and Reddy seems to have beat everyone else. A Government order appointing Jawahar Reddy as the next CS is expected anytime now.  Neerabh Kumar Prasad had already missed a chance several times.

The 1990 batch IAS Jawahar Reddy had always been seen as an efficient officer by chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. In February Jawahar Reddy was moved to CMO as special CS to the chief minister. He handled the subjects of GAD, home, revenue, environment, medical & health, law & legislature, industry & commerce, infrastructure & investment, the government of India correspondence, CMO establishment & residual subjects.

It appears the current dispensation thinks that senior bureaucrat Dr KS Jawahar Reddy is the most efficient officer among his colleagues. This comes, especially after YS Jagan Mohan Reddy picked energy secretary K Vijayanand for the ‘officiating Chief Secretary’ position recently when Sharma went on leave to undergo a small medical procedure.

Though MA & UD secretary, Y Sree Lakshmi’s name was also heard in the corridors of the Velagapudi secretariat as the next chief secretary, it is learnt from the informed sources in the CMO she will have to wait for some more time as she has at least five years of service left. Her promotion to special chief secretary cadre had led to speculations that she would succeed Sameer Sharma in the past.
