The Vidhan Soudha

The JD(S) got an additional MLA in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for about 15 minutes on Friday, 7 July.

The party, however, was not impressed by the additional strength that unexpectedly appeared on its benches. It reported the stranger to the marshals, who escorted 72-year-old Thipperudra out of the House and to the police.

Thipperudra, however, raised a point in the Assembly on Budget day: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly’s security is merely a joke.

The septuagenarian was meant to watch the proceedings from the visitor’s gallery, but after failing to find a seat, he sought a vacant one. He found one, in the House.

Thipperudra walked in without hesitation and took the seat Devadurga MLA Karemma G Nayak had briefly left vacant, and posed as Sagar MLA Belur Gopalakrishna.

The new face, however, made Gurmitkal MLA Sharanagouda Kandakur suspicious. He alerted the marshals, the Assembly secretary, and Speaker of the “historic” incident.

“On the day Siddaramaiah presented his historic budget, this historic incident too occurred. For the first time in the Karnataka Assembly’s history, a man sneaked into the House,” Kandakur later said.

When the marshals approached him, Thipperudra claimed to be an MLA. The marshals handed him to the Vidhana Soudha police.

“We have booked a case against him for trespass and impersonation. He has been produced before the court,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) R Srinivas Gowda told South First.
