Rules are meant to be broken is not a rule in itself. Ask Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and he will tell you why.
Barely a fortnight ago, Shivakumar, who also dons the hat of the Minister of Bengaluru Development, made a passionate appeal to fellow politicians not to deface the city by putting up flex banners.
Unfortunately, Shivakumar was unaware that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee that he heads did not hear his appeal.
He realised the fact on Monday, 21 August, after receiving a Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) challan imposing a fine of ₹50,000 for erecting a flex banner outside the KPCC office on Queen’s Road.
The KPCC’s Backward Classes wing put up the flex banner to commemorate the birth anniversaries of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and former chief minister D Devaraj Urs. Besides Gandhi and Urs, the banner also featured 36 other leaders, including Shivakumar and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah,
The challan was issued to Shivakumar since he is the KPCC president, making him the first one to break the rule he had framed 13 days ago. The flex board was put up with the permission, the BBMP said.
Besides slapping the fine, the civic body’s Vasanthnagar sub-divisional office took away the flex board.
