When it comes to politics, Karnataka can claim a few firsts. Be it “resort politics” or “Operation Lotus” to retain — or grab — power, the state has been the laboratory that got the undivided attention of the entire nation.

If Ramakrishna Hegde had sent 80 MLAs to a resort on Bengaluru’s outskirts to protect them from “Congress vultures” in 1983, mining baron G Janaradhana Reddy has been credited with the success of Operation Lotus or Kamala of 2008.

For a state that has been a victim of change of governments due to defections and horse-trading multiple times, it is no surprise that those in power are always wary of attempts to destabilise governments. It seems now, despite a solid 135 seats in the legislative assembly, the worry of destabilization is on Congress’ mind.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday, 24 July, made a startling revelation that a conspiracy is being hatched in Singapore to destabilise the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

“I have received information indicating that a plan is in motion to destabilise the government from Singapore,” Shivakumar, also the KPCC chief, told a news conference at his residence. He alleged that the Opposition parties are using a foreign land to topple a democratically-elected government in India.

The seasoned politician, however, is not in the mood to let it happen. He said he is keeping a close watch on the developments.

Shivakumar’s revelation came at a time former chief minister and JD(S) leader is in Singapore. JD(S) sources said he has gone to the city state for a medical check-up.

Incidentally, HD Kumaraswamy flew to Singapore soon after the 10 May polls to the state Assembly and returned only on the day of counting of votes.

Reports said he met BJP leaders in Singapore and discussed forging the possibility of a post-poll alliance, but the results of the Karnataka Assembly elections gave a landslide victory to Congress, burying any chances of a coalition.
