Telangana Thalli and the woman in JD(S) flag.
The depiction of Telangana Thalli — the state’s zeitgeist — conceived by the Congress government seems to be inspired by the flag of the JD(S) in neighbouring Karnataka.
Both Telangana Thalli and the woman in the JD(S) flag — a farmer-woman — look alike, with the only difference being the posture.
Telangana Thalli’s posture is standing, while the farmer-woman of Karnataka is walking, carrying a paddy stack on her head. Both women are dressed in red and green. The Telangana Thalli statute has a green saree with a silk border. It reflects, according to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the history of Telangana.
The Telangana Thalli statue was unveiled by Revanth Reddy on the premises of the state Secretariat in Hyderabad on Monday, 9 December, the birthday of Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi.
It was on this day in 2009, that Sonia Gandhi’s decision to form a separate Telangana state was announced by the then Union Minister for Home P Chidambaram.
Telangana Thalli, which has been designed under the direct supervision of Revanth Reddy, is a 17 ft high statue in red-green. The woman is in a standing posture on a pedestal that is supported by clenched fists.
In her left hand are maize cobs, millets and paddy panicles. Her right hand is “abhaya hastam” assuring the people of their well-being.
The red colour of her blouse represents the fighting spirit of Chakali Iylamma who fought against the oppression of zamindars under feudal Telangana and the green colour of her saree represents lush and verdant crops that grow across the state. The expression on her face is one of calmness and serenity.
Then take a look at the JD(S) election symbol. The woman in the symbol is the representation of the agrarian soul of Karnataka. The symbol goes with the party’s commitment spelt out in words — united by value, driven by faith.
The JD(S) claims that its symbol of a woman in green represents the party’s adherence to the principle of upholding women’s rights and ensuring equal opportunities for them.
