The corridors of power in Karnataka are buzzing with discussions, trying to find the crux of all the problems that have been ailing the Siddaramaiah government. It seems they have arrived at the root cause and have coined an apt term, ‘son-stroke’.
From a minister under fire from his party cadre for onboarding a controversial businessman into a committee to the chief minister facing charges of misuse of office, musings in Karnataka are centred on one factor: sons, daughters, spouses, and kin of ministers, inviting trouble for them and the government.
Party workers feel that relatives’ interests are influencing the decisions ministers make. It has made the cadre wonder who really is wielding power: The ministers or their family members?
“Look at our plight. First, we had to fight for the party and win elections. Now, after coming to power, instead of taking comfort in our win and working towards welfare, we have to make space for family members of our leaders in appointments and candidature, and then when they mess up, we have to fight again to keep the party in power,” a ruling party worker rued.
Heat strokes claim lives across India every year. Congress workers fear that the son-stroke in Karnataka Congress will take them down. Is the party leadership listening?
