The last time the common BRS workers saw MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha in public was when she left for her residence after receiving her father’s blessings.
It was after her release from the Tihar jail on 27 August 2024, where she had been lodged for 153 days as an accused in the Delhi excise policy scam.
Her release made the BRS workers upbeat, especially those in Nizamabad, a constituency she had represented in the Lok Sabha between 2014 and 2019. They believed Kavitha’s release vindicated her innocence in the alleged high-profile scam.
Kavitha’s father and former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao had maintained that the excise policy was a decision of the Delhi government, then headed by Arvind Kejriwal, and was not a scam. Still, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Kavitha from her Hyderabad residence on 15 March 2024.
Rao used to reiterate that she would emerge unscathed from the prison. The BRS celebrated her bail, saying the truth had triumphed. However, Kavitha’s health was affected while in prison, and she had to be taken to a hospital.
After being released, Kavitha flew to Hyderabad from Delhi and went straight to her house after taking her father’s blessings. And that was the last time when one saw her.
Ever since she has been keeping a low profile. She used to make her voice heard on any policy decision of the state or central governments and was at the forefront of seeking 33 percent reservation for women in legislative houses. She even held a major demonstration in Delhi.
The grapevine has it that she is waiting for the court to clear the case against her. In any case, there are no elections now and she seems to be relaxing now after the jail had taken an emotional toll on her.
The party workers are looking forward to her appearing in public as she is a good speaker in English, Telugu, and Hindi while nailing either the Congress government in the state or the BJP at the Centre. They are hoping that she will come out of the sabbatical soon with all guns blazing.
