Delivering a rude jolt to the YSRCP, its Rajya Sabha member Ryaga Krishnaiah resigned from the Upper House on Tuesday, 24 September.

The Backward Classes leader submitted his resignation letter to Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who immediately accepted it. Krishnaiah resigned with four years left in the House.

Recently, two YSRCP Rajya Sabah members — Mopidevi Venkataramana and Beeda Mastan Rao — resigned, bringing the YSRCP’s strength in the Upper House down to nine from 11. It has now fallen to eight with the exit of Krishnaiah. When the YSRCP had 11 members, it was the fourth largest party in Rajya Sabha.

Though Krishnaiah is from Telangana, former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy sent him to Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in June 2022, to send a message that he cared for the BCs. The 70-year-old BC leader is from Rallagudpally in the Vikarabad district.

Advantage TDP

Krishnaiah’s exit would benefit the Telugu Desam Party in the by-election. The TDP-led NDA has a majority in the Assembly and its candidate would win the election.

Regardless of the party he was aligned with, Krishnaiah has always been on the side of the BCs, even on issues that went against the party line. After resigning, Krishna said that he left the Upper House since he felt a need to rebuild and energise the BC movement in Telangana, indicating that his future activity would be in Telangana.

Krishnaiah had represented the LB Nagar constituency in the Telangana Assembly as a TDP member. He was nominated as the chief minister candidate by the TDP and BJP in 2014. He had held leadership positions in the RSS, and ABVP.
