The YSRCP will oppose the Opposition alliance’s no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government in the Manipur violence issue.

It will also back the ruling NDA in passing the Delhi Ordinance Bill that aims to wrest away administrative powers from the AAP, which is in power in Delhi.

The other major party from Andhra Pradesh, the TDP, is yet to make public its stand on the no-trust motion moved in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, 26 July. The TDP, however, is likely to follow in YSRCP’s footsteps.

With nine members in the Rajya Sabha and 22 in the Lok Sabha, the YSRCP’s support to the BJP is crucial to pass the contentious Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, also called the Delhi Ordinance Bill.

Though it has not made it public, the Opposition TDP in Andhra Pradesh is also likely to follow the YSRCP in supporting the BJP in Parliament.

Why the YSRCP support?

“We have decided to support the Delhi Ordinance Bill in the Parliament,” YSRCP parliamentary party leader V Vijaysai Reddy told reporters on Thursday, 27 July,  in the Parliament House.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, hands over the control of the national capital’s bureaucratic machinery to the Centre.

The reason behind the YSRCP’s decision to support the Delhi Ordinance Bill is that Delhi is still not a full-fledged state.

Vijaysai said if Delhi was a full-fledged state, the YSRCP would have voted against the Bill.

‘How does it help the country?’

On the no-confidence motion, Vijaysai sought to know how it would help the country.

“Trying to weaken the Central government at this time of disturbance in Manipur and two hostile neighbours is not in the national interest. This is the time to work together, not against each other. The YSRCP shall support the government and vote against the motion,” he added.

With YSRCP’s backing, the NDA now has a majority of 123 votes against the 108 votes the Opposition alliance is expected to get against the Delhi Ordinance Bill.

This includes the 92 BJP MPs and members of the party’s alliance partners such as the AIADMK and other smaller allies. The TDP has one member in the Upper House.

The YSRCP has been extending its support to the BJP’s legislation process in both Houses whenever required over the past few years.
