Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday, 9 December, launched a sharp attack on the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government, alleging that it had released “cooked-up” economic figures to project an artificial narrative of growth in the state.

In a detailed post on X, the YSRCP president criticised the advance estimates of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) for the first half of 2025–26 released by Chief Minister Naidu on Monday.

Reddy claimed that the government had prepared these figures “to deceive” people, charging that they did not reflect the fiscal reality captured in the official accounts compiled by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.

According to the former chief minister, while governments can manipulate advance GSDP estimates, they cannot “fudge” CAG-audited state accounts, which reflect actual receipts and expenditure.

He said the CAG’s provisional accounts for the first six months of the current financial year point to “abysmally low growth” in government revenues, high levels of borrowing, weak capital expenditure, and sluggish consumption and investment trends.

‘Alarming levels of fiscal and revenue deficits’

Reddy further alleged that the current revenue patterns indicated “alarming levels” of fiscal and revenue deficits, accusing the government of allowing “rampant corruption” that was draining state revenues.

“When this is the factual position, the TDP alliance government attempts to deceive the people into believing that the State’s economy is booming,” he wrote, invoking Abraham Lincoln’s famous quote: “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

The former chief minister also posed a series of questions to Naidu, demanding clarification on the alleged mismatch between the TDP’s growth claims and the state’s fiscal condition.

Reddy’s Questions to Naidu:

  • If the state’s economy is flourishing, why is the government facing such fiscal stress?
  • If GSDP growth during the 2014–19 TDP regime was truly commendable, why was Andhra Pradesh’s contribution to national GDP only 4.45 percent compared to 4.78 percent recorded during 2019–24?
  • If the state performed so well under your leadership, why did per capita income rankings not improve even by one position during those five years?

Reddy urged the public to examine the CAG figures, arguing that they reveal the “truth” about Naidu’s governance record and counter the allegations made against the state’s performance during the YSRCP’s tenure from 2019 to 2024.
