Valuable cattle

Synopsis: An Ongole cow fetched ₹41 crore at a recent auction in Minas Gerais in Brazil. Ongole cattle, with roots in the Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, are very famous. No doubt they are more valuable than people. They are very fortunate to have rich food daily, in a country where hunger is a pandemic.

Those who hold the view that homo sapiens is the most valuable species in nature should have their heads examined.

In fact, men are no match to cattle in value. Can you imagine anyone buying a man for ₹41 crore? Even in a 1994 Telugu film, Shubhalagnam, a wealthy woman offered money to buy the husband of a middle-class housewife, but the offered amount was only ₹1 crore. Anyway, it is fiction.

However, an Ongole cow fetched ₹41 crore at a recent auction in Minas Gerais in Brazil. Ongole cattle, with roots in the Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, are very famous.

The breed is becoming very popular and is in high demand in the faraway continent.

Chief minister elated

Elated over Andhra Pradesh’s cow hitting international headlines, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the Ongole cow has shown its strength on the world stage.

“It is proof of AP’s rich livestock heritage to the world. The Ongole cattle are renowned for their superior genes, strength, and endurance. The GoAP is working to conserve this breed and support dairy farmers,” he said on X.

It so happens that Brazil breeds Ongole cattle as they have superior genes compared to other cattle.

The Ongole cows and bulls are known for their strength and disease resistance. They are easily distinguishable from their prominent skin folds (gangadolu) under the neck. The bulls are used as draught animals and also as milch cattle.

Andhra Pradesh’s sister state Telangana also celebrates buffaloes. Sadar festival is one such festival. The one celebrated at YMCA Narayanaguda, is very popular. It is celebrated annually by Yadavas as a part of Diwali festivities.

The animals are decorated with garlands. They are taken on a parade through the streets as crowds dance to drum beats. They are quite expensive and are valued at not less than ₹35 crore (Garuda). Those who rear them spend a lot. The daily food expenditure on them is about ₹ 5,000 to ₹6,000.

No doubt they are more valuable than people. They are very fortunate to have rich food daily, in a country where hunger is a pandemic.
