Police said the unidentified man could be aged around 45.

An autorickshaw driver delivered a parcel to a family in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district on Thursday, 19 December, leaving the recipients horrified.

The police are now probing the parcel —a decomposing body of an unidentified man packed in a wooden crate — addressed to Sagi Tulsi, daughter of Mudunur Rangaraju of Yandagandi village in Undi Mandal. An extortion note in the parcel demanded ₹1.30 crore and warned of dire consequences if the family failed to pay the money.

Investigators said the dead man could be aged around 45.

The family told the police that the consignment was delivered to Tulsi’s under-construction house. The house was being constructed with the help of the Kshatriya Seva Samiti.

Police said Tulsi’s parents found the parcel and the severed body on Thursday night. They reported the matter immediately to the local police station.

Earlier, Tulsi had received a phone call, purportedly from the Kshatriya Seva Samiti in Rajamahendravaram, saying a parcel had been delivered. The Samiti has been providing building construction materials to Tulsi.

On being informed of the parcel, West Godavari Superintendent of Police Adan Naeem Asmi reached the scene. “A thorough investigation is needed,” he told reporters.

Incidentally, Tulsi has been living with her daughter after her husband, Srinivasa Raju of Nidadavol, went missing 11 years ago. It was said that he left the family after incurring huge debts. It was not immediately known if the latest incident was linked to Raju’s debts.

“We have many suspicions and are probing different angles. We will solve the case soon,” a police officer told South First.

Investigators have found the autorickshaw driver who had delivered the parcel and was interrogating him. They have also contacted the Kshatriya Seva Samiti.

Police have shifted the body to Bhimavaram Government Hospital for a postmortem examination.
