A late-night journey on the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route turned into a nightmare on Friday, 24 October, when a private bus caught fire near Chinna Tekur village in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, leaving several passengers dead and many injured.

Amidst the entire ordeal, Naveen Kumar Varma, a regular citizen hailing from Hindupur, became an unexpected hero to the victims. “While I was going to meet my brother from Hindupur to Nandyal, I saw the bus on fire. I have no idea how it happened. We did not see anything. By the time we saw the fire, it was roaring. There was no way to go near the bus; there was that much fire around it,” he described the situation, speaking to the media.

“At last, a person identified as Ramesh broke the glass and came out. The glass opening was too small for a person to pass through, leaving very little space. As people tried to escape through it, many were injured by the broken glass,” he continued.

“I have no idea how many members were on board. I brought six to the hospital. They have no issues right now. Ramesh, who broke the glass, is heavily injured. But the others are safe,” he reported.

Informing the officials

Another eyewitness, Haima, also took the initiative to try and assist with the situation. Returning from Puttaparthi to Hyderabad, she came across an unusual traffic jam on the road. Seeing the fire, she immediately tried to call the police and officials.

“The bystanders did not call the police or authorities yet; they were recording the incident on their phones. I had to rush to call Kurnool’s SP and officials immediately. Soon after, the police, fire department and ambulances showed up to respond to the fire,” she reported in a video.

“I saw people sitting on the road and crying about their family members who were still inside. It was a horrifying scene which disturbed me greatly,” she said, recalling the graphic scenes from the bus amidst the fire.

The fire accident

While the situation continues to develop, both the Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of Telangana have issued numerous clarifications and statements regarding further actions.

According to Kurnool district collector Siri, the wires connecting the door were damaged because the bike got stuck under the bus and therefore did not open. This forced the passengers to break the emergency exit, but only some of them managed to escape. One of the drivers was later reportedly taken into custody.

The Telangana Transport Dept says that the bus, while registered in another state, comes under Raigada in Odisha. E-Challans, including those of speeding issued by Telangana Police, are to the tune of 23,000.

AP Health Minister Sri Satya Kumar Yadav expressed deep shock over the private bus accident at Chinnatekur village in Kurnool district. He directed the Kurnool GGH Superintendent to ensure top medical care for the injured. Forensic doctors and Maha Prasthanam vehicles have been deployed, and DNA samples are being collected for identification. Twelve people were injured, six were discharged after first aid, and one was seriously hurt but stable. The Minister urged officials to coordinate and prevent any lapses in medical response.

Additionally, the Telangana CMO clarified that out of the 43 passengers on board, 23 managed to escape, 11 bodies have been recovered, and efforts are underway to ascertain the status of the remaining passengers.
