Increase in employment nationwide
Synopsis: Telangana and Tamil Nadu led employment growth among the 15 to 29 age group in the southern states in 2023-24, while Andhra Pradesh recorded the sharpest decline, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). Despite a national rise in the worker population ratio (WPR) to 41.7 percent Andhra Pradesh saw a steep three percentage point drop, with Karnataka and Kerala also experiencing declines.
Andhra Pradesh recorded the sharpest decline in job participation among the 15 to 29 age group in the southern states in 2023-24, while Telangana saw the highest increase, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Though the worker population ratio (WPR) at the national level rose from 40.1 percent in 2022-23 to 41.7 percent in 2023-24, Andhra Pradesh registered a steep decline of three percentage points, dropping from 40.7 percent in 2022-23 to 37.7 percent in 2023-24.
Similarly, Karnataka saw a 2.4 percentage point drop in employment, falling from 40.5 percent to 38.1 percent, while Kerala recorded a marginal decline of 0.4 percentage points, from 28.9 percent to 28.5 percent.
In contrast, Telangana and Tamil Nadu both recorded high employment growth, with Telangana’s rate rising by 4.4 percentage points from 36.3 percent in 2022-23 to 40.7 percent in 2023-24, and Tamil Nadu registering a 2.1 percentage point increase from 32.9 percent to 35 percent over the same period.
The PLFS 2023-24 data was presented by the Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya in the Lok Sabha on 10 March in response to a starred question by Congress MP Murari Lal Meena.
The Ministry attributed the 1.6 percent national increase in employment to various government initiatives focused on job creation and skill development. It further listed the following schemes as contributors to the growth:
Additionally, the ministry noted that the National Career Service (NCS) platform has facilitated approximately 4.7 crore job vacancies, offering job listings in both the private and government sectors, along with career counselling and vocational guidance.
For unemployed insured workers, the Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY), under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), provides financial assistance.
The unemployment benefit has been increased from 25 percent to 50 percent of average daily earnings, payable for up to 90 days.
