On Monday, 4 September, the Telangana High Court rejected the bail petition of YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy’s father YS Bhaskar Reddy and their aide Uday Kumar Reddy in connection with the murder case of former MP YS Vivekananda Reddy in 2019.

Upholding the decision taken by the special court for CBI cases to reject the bail, the high court made it clear that the bail could not be granted to them.

‘Bhaskar Reddy played a crucial role’

The CBI explained to the court the consequences to be faced if bail was granted to them and argued that Bhaskar Reddy played a crucial role in the case.

The CBI, which is still probing the murder that happened in 2019, charged Bhaskar Reddy under Sections 120B (conspiracy), 302 (murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly playing a crucial role in the case.

The premier investigating agency arrested him from Pulivendula in Andhra Pradesh in April 2023 and since then, he has been lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail in Hyderabad as a remand prisoner.

About Vivekananda Reddy

The case is related to the murder of Vivekananda Reddy — popularly known as Viveka — a former minister and a former Member of Parliament of the Kadapa constituency.

Viveka was the younger brother of the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who was the former chief minister of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh and the uncle of current Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Vivekananda Reddy was an MLA of Pulivendula constituency in 1985 and 1994, and a Member of Lok Sabha from Kadapa Parliamentary constituency in 1999 and 2004.

He was a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council in 2009. He also served as minister of agriculture and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology, Environment, and Forest, constituted by the Union government in 2005.

The case development

On the intervening night of 14 and 15 March 2019, Viveka was brutally murdered in his residence and his body was found in a pool of blood in the bathroom inside his bedroom.

After the murder, the police registered an FIR in Pulivendula Urban Police Station (crime number 84/2019) initially under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, based on a complaint from MV Krishna Reddy, who was the personal assistant of the deceased. It was subsequently altered to Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

As many as three Special Investigation Teams (SIT) set up by the then-state government probed the case, which was later taken over by the CBI in July 2020.

The CBI filed a charge sheet in the murder case on 26 October 2021 and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on 31 January 2022.

The CBI has already questioned Avinash Reddy, Bhaskar Reddy, and others allegedly involved in the case several times. It also arrested Avinash Reddy in the case and, later, anticipatory bail was granted.
