TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday, 9 January, met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar in Vijayawada and raised a slew of complaints against the ruling YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh.

Accompanied by Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan, Naidu said they explained all the issues clearly to the Election Commission (EC), whose members are on a two-day visit to the state ahead of the forthcoming legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

“Atrocities are happening unlike any other time. Democracy is being ridiculed. To restrain us from working, they (YSRCP government) tried to destroy the entire structure of our party, its workers and leaders,” Naidu alleged, addressing reporters after meeting the Election Commission.

Voter list manipulation

The former chief minister also alleged that the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led state government had resorted to manipulation of the voter lists by including bogus voters.

In a press release issued after the meeting, he noted that the state government was aware of “the very fact that YSRCP cannot win without manipulating voters and registering bogus votes, particularly after facing resistance and opposition from the public”.

The TDP claimed that the YSRCP submitted 1.15 lakh bogus votes in the Chandragiri constituency under Form 6, of which 33,000 were approved.

“They provided evidence and explained the situation to the officers of the Central Election Commission,” the press release said.

The former chief minister also took to the note of the CEC, the transfer of certain police officials who, according to him, are actively colluding with the ruling dispensation to foist cases to implicate and arrest the TDP leaders and cadres.

‘Bitter experience’

“They are collecting the details of senior leaders of our party and blackmailing them not to be active in the political campaigns. We had a bitter experience during previous the local body elections during which all our active leaders were kept away from election work,” said Naidu in his letter to the EC.

This attempt is to malign us without our role of participation in any of the alleged offences,” he added.

The TDP chief appealed to the EC to allocate officials for election duty based on best practices followed at the national level.

According to Naidu, experienced personnel such as teachers and government officials are generally appointed on election duty whereas the YSRCP government was assigning women police officials as booth-level officers (BLO).

Stating that 2,600 women police officials have been assigned as BLOs in 83 constituencies, he questioned their expertise in election duties.

The demands

He demanded that the EC deploy central police observers if needed, set up a separate cell, and monitor the election process to root out irregularities.

Naidu also brought to the attention of the EC that government officials, including district collectors, have been participating in an election campaign titled “Why AP Needs Jagan” to promote the YSRCP chief.

Complaining that thousands of cases had been filed against TDP and Jana Sena leaders and activists, Naidu said 250 persons were booked in the Punganur case alone and now bindover cases were being filed.

The EC gave a patient hearing to all their complaints and vowed to protect democracy without compromise, the TDP chief said.

In the event of irregularities, Naidu said, his party would fight until action is taken.
