YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu

Synopsis: The ruling TDP in Andhra Pradesh has dismissed claims by the opposition YSRCP that a delegation of its legislators submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Kurnool on Thursday, describing it as an attempt to gain ‘publicity and political mileage’. Earlier in the day, the YSRCP said that its legislators had met the Prime Minister to oppose the TDP government’s decision to privatise state medical colleges and to demand the inclusion of Valmikis in the Scheduled Tribes list.

Is the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) claim that it submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, 16 October, false?

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has said that no such memorandum was submitted by YSRCP legislators, describing the Opposition party’s statements as false propaganda aimed at gaining ‘publicity and political mileage’.

YSRCP’s claim over medical college privatisation

Earlier in the day, the YSRCP issued a statement claiming that its leaders—Aluru MLA B Virupakshi, MLC A Madhusudan, and Zilla Parishad Chairman Errabothula Papireddy—had met the Prime Minister and handed over a memorandum urging him to ask Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to roll back his decision to privatise government medical colleges in the state.

The YSRCP legislators also told the media that while former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had initiated 17 new government medical colleges, the present TDP government was attempting to hand them over to private individuals close to the ruling party.

They condemned the move to permit single tender bids, calling it “highly objectionable and financially irresponsible.” The legislators further alleged that the government had relaxed existing norms to benefit private entities with close ties to those in power.

TDP refutes Opposition’s claim

The TDP strongly refuted the YSRCP’s claims, asserting that no such representation was made to the Prime Minister.

In a statement, the party said, “The propaganda by the YSRCP that they had submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister against the privatisation of medical colleges and for the inclusion of Valmikis in the ST list is completely false. No such memorandum was ever submitted.”

The party also said that when the YSRCP was in power, it had never invited TDP leaders to any of the Prime Minister’s programmes in Andhra Pradesh. In contrast, the current TDP government, it said, had followed protocol and invited YSRCP representatives to attend official events.

“It is unfortunate that instead of making use of the opportunity given to them, the YSRCP leaders chose to mislead the people with fake claims. They have tried to use the Prime Minister’s visit for their own political gain,” the TDP statement added.
