In a major tragedy, three members of a family died in a fire mishap in the early hours of Sunday, 25 September, in Renigunta, near the temple town of Tirupati, in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
According to the police, radiologist Dr Ravi Shankar Reddy was burnt alive in the fire.
His two children — 11-year-old Siddhartha and six-year-old Karthika — died due to suffocation while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
Reddy’s wife Dr Ananta Lakshmi and his mother Ramasubbamma survived the fire, but sustained burns.
Initial reports suggested that a short circuit had led to the fire on the top floor of the two-storeyed building.
The doctor couple runs a clinic, named Karthika clinics, on the ground floor.
When the mishap took place, Reddy was sleeping on the top floor, where the short circuit is said to have happened.
The entire top floor was gutted in fire, due to which Reddy was charred to death.
As the fire spread to the first floor of the building, where other family members were residing, fire tenders rushed to the spot and tried to douse the flames.
Neighbours and other locals who had noticed the flames and thick smoke coming out of the building had alerted the fire personnel.
Initially, the fire personnel rescued Reddy’s children, wife, and mother. However, both children died in the hospital while undergoing treatment.
Reddy, a native of Jammalamadugu of the Kadapa district, shifted to Renigunta with his family a few years ago.
Apart from running the clinic at his residence on the ground floor, Reddy used to work in a private hospital.
His wife Dr Ananta Lakshmi was a general-medicine practitioner.
