In a shocking incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy was injured when a stone, allegedly flung at him, hit his forehead. The ‘attack’, as described by YSRCP, took place while Jagan Mohan Reddy was waving at the public during the “Memantha Siddham” bus yatra in Vijayawada on Saturday, 13 April.

The alleged assault occurred as the Chief Minister was extending greetings from atop the bus to the gathered crowd.

YS Jagan sustained an injury above his left eyebrow as a result of being struck by the stone. MLA Vellampalli Srinivas, who was standing next to the Chief Minister, also suffered an injury to his left eye in the attack.

Immediate first aid was provided to Chief Minister Jagan. Despite the ordeal, he opted to continue his bus journey after receiving initial treatment. He concluded Day 13 of the Memantha Siddham Yatra at Kesarapalle.

The incident took place at the Vivekananda School Centre in Singhnagar, Vijayawada. While an investigation is ongoing, leaders from the YSRCP have alleged that the Opposition TDP orchestrated the attack.

Hafeez Khan, a prominent leader in the YSRCP, wasted no time in pointing fingers at the TDP, alleging their involvement in what he described as a “cowardly act.”

He said, “TDP is behind this cowardly act because they cannot bear to see the massive response that Chief Minister Jagan is receiving during his Memantha Siddham Yatra in their so called bastions (Vijayawada). We urge the police to nab the culprits. TDP should know that they cannot win the election by such attacks.”

Reactions pour in

Contrary to the YSRCP’s allegations, the Opposition TDP has alleged that the attack on YS Jagan is another attempt to gain sympathy, similar to what he allegedly did in 2019 with the attack on him at the Visakhapatnam Airport, leading up to the 2019 election.

Surprisingly, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu took to X to condemn the attack on his political adversary.

“I strongly condemn the attack on @ysjagan. I request the @ECISVEEP to initiate an impartial and unbiased inquiry into the incident and punish the responsible officials,” he said.

Jagan Mohan’s sister and the Andhra Pradesh Congress chief, YS Sharmila, said that if the attack was done on purpose, everyone should definitely condemn it.

She posted on X, “It is sad and unfortunate that Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy was attacked and injured above his left eye as part of the election campaign today. Democracy has no place for violence. Every democrat must condemn violence. I am praying to God for Jagan’s speedy recovery.”

BRS working president KT Rama Rao also condemned the attack on YS Jagan.

He posted on X, “I strongly condemn the attack on AP CM Jagan Mohan Reddy Garu. Violence has no place in democracy and I hope strict preventive measures are put in place by ECI.”

The same was echoed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.

He posted on X, “I condemn the stone-throwing on Andhra Pradesh CM Thiru YS Jagan. Political differences should never escalate to violence. Let’s uphold civility and mutual respect as we engage in the democratic process. Wishing him a quick recovery.”
