Sachin Tendulkar at Andhra University centenary spotlights N Lokesh’s ‘cricket diplomacy’

Synopsis: Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s presence at Andhra University’s centenary is being seen by insiders as part of Nara Lokesh’s use of cricket to build influence and project the state’s image. Recent engagements at international matches have helped Lokesh build ties with figures such as Aditya Mittal, with discussions moving to industrial projects including the ArcelorMittal–Nippon Steel plant in Andhra Pradesh.

The presence of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar at Andhra University’s (AU) centenary celebrations is being hailed by insiders as part of Nara Lokesh’s emerging “cricket diplomacy” to amplify the state’s image.

In recent months, Lokesh has been more visible at high-profile cricket events, using the sport’s network to build ties with key figures across government, business and players. Those engagements, sources said, are beginning to translate into tangible strategic outcomes for the state.

One instance came on the sidelines of an international fixture in Colombo, where Lokesh is understood to have met Aditya Mittal. Talks moved beyond cricket to pending issues around the ArcelorMittal–Nippon Steel project in Andhra Pradesh.

Both sides agreed on timelines for the groundbreaking of what is positioned as India’s largest greenfield steel plant in Anakapalli district.

Personal rapport behind official invite

In parallel, Lokesh’s interactions with Tendulkar developed into a personal rapport over multiple meetings at matches and private occasions. Lokesh also attended Tendulkar family celebrations involving Arjun Tendulkar.

That relationship played a decisive role when planning began for Andhra University’s 100-year celebrations. Lokesh is believed to have reached out to Tendulkar to serve as chief guest, which the former Team India batsman accepted.

Tendulkar is learnt to have declined any appearance fee and attended the event pro bono. His presence elevated the stature of the celebrations and helped the event gain massive traction online, with visuals from Visakhapatnam going viral.

If the AU centenary is any guide, cricket is emerging as an unlikely but effective diplomatic channel in Lokesh’s playbook.
