Reservoirs in Andhra's Krishna river likely to receive good inflows in a few days

The inflows into reservoirs on the Krishna river will likely increase in the next few days. Already, reservoirs in Karnataka – Almatti and Narayanpur – are receiving huge inflows following heavy rains in the Krishna river’s catchment areas.

Though there isn’t much inflow into Srisailam, they are likely to pick up.

On Friday, 19 July, the inflow into the reservoir was 7,931 cusecs and outflow was 7063 cusecs. The reservoir has only 32.51 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water as against its gross capacity of 215.8 tmcft.

The encouraging aspect is that the discharge at Narayanpur was 70,780 cusecs as on 18 July while inflow was at 65,801 cusecs. The reservoir is almost full. It has 34.93 tmcft of water as against its gross capacity of 37.64 tmcft.

Upstream of Narayanpur, Karnatkaa’s Almatti is also receiving huge inflows. It has about 101.33 tmcft of water as against its gross capacity of 129.7 tmcft. Outflow to Narayanpur was 65,480 cusecs while the inflow was at 41,478 cuses.

Unless Srisailam fills up and water is released downstream, there is no way Nagarjuna Sagar’s water levels will rise. As on 19 July, the reservoir has 123.5 tmcft (39.58 percent) as against its gross storage of 312.05 tmcft. On 19 July, the inflow into Nagarjuna Sagar was 8,462 while the outflow was about 6,562 cusecs.

At present, water is being received copiously into the Jurala from Naryanpur. Jurala, which is upstream of Srisailam, has 4.95 tmcft (51.25 percent) as against its gross capacity of 9.66 tmcft. As inflow into Jurala is increasing.  authorities are generating power from its hydel power station.
