Synopsis: Raj Kasireddy, ex-IT advisor to former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was detained by Andhra Pradesh’s SIT at Hyderabad airport on April 21 in connection with the ₹4,000 crore liquor scam. He was taken to Vijayawada for questioning after the High Court denied anticipatory bail. Kasireddy is suspected of playing a major role in the alleged YSRCP-era scam

Raj Kasireddy, who is facing allegations of involvement in the ₹4,000 crore liquor scam that took place under the previous YSRCP regime, was taken into custody by the Andhra Pradesh’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Monday, 21 April.

Kasireddy served as the IT advisor to former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The SIT suspects he played a key role in the liquor scam, which, according to TDP leaders, caused a colossal loss to the state exchequer during the YSRCP’s tenure.

As soon as he arrived in Hyderabad, the police detained him and took him to Vijayawada for questioning.

Police take action

The police acted swiftly after the Andhra Pradesh High Court earlier in the day refused to grant him anticipatory bail. Kasireddy had reportedly told the police that he would appear before them on Tuesday, but on learning of his arrival in Hyderabad, authorities took him into custody.

The police had issued three notices to him, summoning him for questioning regarding his alleged role in the scam—specifically, how it was orchestrated and to what extent he was involved.

Former YSRCP Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy, while deposing before the SIT on 18 April in Vijayawada, alleged that Kasireddy was the main architect of the scam. Reddy claimed that he had initially supported Kasireddy’s involvement in the YSRCP, believing him to be a “gentleman”, but never expected he would turn out to be one with a “criminal mind.”
