Former Andhra Pradesh Intelligence Chief PSR Anjaneyulu has been remanded to judicial custody until 7 May in connection with the alleged illegal arrest and harassment of Mumbai-based model and aspiring actor Kadambari Jethwani and her parents.
The Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday, 23 April, submitted its remand report to the III Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Vijayawada, naming Anjaneyulu as accused number two in the case.
He was arrested in Hyderabad on Tuesday and brought to Vijayawada for questioning. Currently under suspension and holding the rank of Director General of Police, the IPS officer, representing himself, denied any involvement in the case, claiming that police were “falsely implicating” him.
According to the CID, Anjaneyulu conspired with Kukkala Vidyasagar, Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and the primary accused, to orchestrate the arrest of Jethwani and her parents while the party was in power.
The remand report accuses Anjaneyulu of “disregarding the law” and “interfering at every stage” of the arrest process, which led to the judicial remand of the Jethwani family for over 40 days before they were granted bail.
Vidyasagar had alleged that Jethwani blackmailed and extorted him into transferring five acres of land in Krishna district. The CID described these allegations as fabricated.
The report states that Vidyasagar befriended Jethwani after a modelling event and later proposed marriage, which she rejected. “Angered by the rejection,” Vidyasagar allegedly filed the false complaint “to humiliate her.”
The arrests were carried out on 3 February 2024 in Mumbai. Jethwani and her parents were then brought to Vijayawada.
In a complaint filed in August 2024, Jethwani alleged the high-handed behaviour by police, and custodial harassment. “Though we had not committed any crime, we spent 42 days in prison,” she stated.
Anjaneyulu and two other officers, Kanthi Rana Tata and Vishal Gunni, were suspended in September 2024 after the TDP-led NDA government came to power in Andhra Pradesh.
In its remand report, the CID accused Anjaneyulu of forging documents, including an unregistered sale agreement dated 30 November 2018, which was used to support the complaint.
These actions, the CID said, constitute offences under Section 467 of the Indian Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The CID cited concerns that Anjaneyulu might tamper with evidence, intimidate witnesses, or obstruct the investigation if not taken into custody. It said he ignored a police summons and later responded via message that he had “nothing to do with the case.”
Call data records from 30 January to 3 February 2024 reportedly show communication between Anjaneyulu, then Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata, then Deputy Commissioner Vishal Gunni and Mumbai police officials. The CID said flight tickets for officers were booked before an FIR was registered, suggesting “premeditation.”
Gunni told investigators that Anjaneyulu summoned him to the Chief Minister’s Office and “assigned him the task of arresting Jethwani” despite Gunni’s lack of prior involvement.
The CID alleged that Anjaneyulu “wielded enormous influence in the government” and facilitated the arrests in violation of the family’s rights.
According to the CID, then Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata informed the then Director General of Police, KV Rajendranath Reddy, about the plan, which it said was approved.
