Premature baby overcomes life-threatening lung condition after 18-day battle at KIMS Cuddles, Visakhapatnam
Synopsis: A premature baby born at 36 weeks in Anakapalli overcame a life-threatening lung condition after 18 days of intensive care at KIMS Cuddles Hospital, Visakhapatnam. Diagnosed with dangerously high pulmonary pressure and severe respiratory distress, he received advanced treatment and was successfully discharged, highlighting both medical excellence and the newborn’s remarkable resilience
In an inspiring story of resilience and advanced medical care, a premature baby boy has been successfully discharged from KIMS Cuddles Hospital in Visakhapatnam after surviving a life-threatening lung condition.
Born at 36 weeks to a 28-year-old mother from Anakapalli, the newborn was diagnosed with dangerously high pulmonary pressure shortly after birth—a condition that severely limits oxygen flow to the bloodstream and can lead to organ failure.
Within 12 hours of delivery, the infant experienced severe respiratory distress and was urgently transferred to KIMS Cuddles for critical care.
“The baby’s condition was extremely serious, and standard ventilation wasn’t enough,” said Dr. Nikhil Tenneti, Chief Neonatologist and Head of Neonatology at KIMS Cuddles.
“We had to use High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), which delivers up to 900 breaths per minute, along with nitric oxide therapy to reduce the pressure in his lungs,” he said.
While most babies with similar conditions either recover within a few days or deteriorate quickly, this infant remained on HFOV for nine days—an exceptionally rare duration.
Over his 18-day stay, a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Tenneti and Dr. Santosh Kumar, Clinical Director and Pediatric Intensivist, worked tirelessly to stabilize his vital organs and support his development.
“This little warrior showed immense strength. Every breath he took was a fight, and he overcame it all,” said Dr. Tenneti.
“Seeing him go home in his mother’s arms, healthy and smiling, was an unforgettable moment for our entire team.”
The baby’s recovery underscores both the advancements in neonatal care and the unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals at KIMS Cuddles. His story now stands as a beacon of hope for families navigating complex neonatal challenges.
