The political, sparks ignited on Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh with the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government renaming Dr NTR University of Health Sciences to Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy University of Health Sciences, continued to fly thick and fast on Thursday.
TDP chief and also late NTR’s son-in-law N Chandrababu Naidu met Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan at Raj Bhavan on Thursday and urged him to reject the Bill passed by the state legislature renaming the university, headquartered in Vijayawada.
As per procedure, the Bill will now reach the Governor for his nod.
“The Bill to change the name of the university was passed in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly when the Opposition was not in the house. Interestingly, the Cabinet approval was taken during dark hours, which points out the unconstitutional and anti-people nature of the Bill,” Naidu said in a memorandum to the Governor.
“As the chancellor of the Dr NTRUHS, your excellency should not accept the changing of the university’s name. Further, as per the Constitution, only after your excellency’s ascent the Bill passed in the APLA would become law. Therefore, it is appealing to your excellency to intervene and stop the unconstitutional and anti-people proposal to change the name of Dr NTRUHS,” he added.
At several places across the state, TDP held protests against the government’s decision.

The Health University in Andhra was established on 1/11/1986 by the then CM Late Sri N T Rama Rao Garu. It was only apt to be named after Sri NTR Garu as he initiated it.
But today to remove his name, cannot be justified in any which way & rename it YSR Health University pic.twitter.com/OJ8SKAoqZN— Daggubati Purandeswari 🇮🇳 (Modi Ka Parivar) (@PurandeswariBJP) September 21, 2022

NTR’s grandson Jr NTR, who is a popular Tollywood actor, had taken to Twitter to express his opinion about the name change.
Interestingly he played safe in his response, without ruffling any feathers.
Jr NTRS not directly condemning the government’s actions and playing it “safe” irked a few TDP leaders.
“Both NTR and YSR are great leaders who have gained immense popularity. Replacing one’s name with another name does not raise the stature of YSR, and likewise, it does not lower the stature of NTR. Renaming the university cannot erase the immense popularity NTR earned and his memories in the hearts of the Telugu people,” said Jr NTR.
