Dr. DVG Shankara Rao, Chairman of the State ST Commission, has called for urgent action on the rehabilitation of those displaced by the Polavaram Project. In a review meeting with R&R officials in Vijayawada, he stressed the need to address gaps in housing, compensation, and infrastructure.
Officials reported that 76 colonies were sanctioned, with 26 completed so far, and basic amenities like water, power, and education are being developed. Skill development training, including tailoring and computer courses, has been provided to over 5,000 individuals. Dr. Rao highlighted the importance of respecting tribal traditions and lifestyles in the rehabilitation process and emphasised the need for sustainable job creation. He also insisted on improving road and transport connectivity to the new colonies. The Chairman urged coordinated efforts from both Central and State governments to ensure long-term support for the affected communities.
