Green Hydrogen project in Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for a big-ticket green Hydrogen project at Pudimadaka in the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, 8 January.

The project is seen as one of the benefits the Union government have been extending to the state in return for the ruling TDP being part of the NDA.

The project will be set up by NTPC Green Energy. The NTPC subsidiary has already signed a joint venture agreement with the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) to develop a portfolio of renewable energy projects.

The project, estimated to entail an investment of ₹1.87 lakh crore, will be a landmark initiative for Andhra Pradesh.

The NTPC Green Energy will invest ₹80,000 crore in the first phase of the green Hydrogen project which is expected to be completed by April-May, 2027.

The project

The joint venture proposes to establish 10 gigawatts (GW) of pumped hydro storage, with a production capacity of 0.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of derivatives, and to set up 25 GW of solar, wind, and hybrid power projects.

The state government expects that this energy facility will create 1.06 lakh jobs and provide economic benefits worth ₹20,620 crore for Andhra Pradesh over the next 25 years.

This aligns with the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy and will contribute to achieving a target of 78.50 GW solar power, 35 GW wind power, 22 GW pumped hydro storage, and 1.5 MMTPA green hydrogen production over the next five years.

This facility will produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, with a planned investment of ₹1.87 lakh crore in several phases. The project will play a significant role in India’s green Hydrogen ambitions.

According to sources, the NTPC will collaborate with international companies including Japan’s Toyo Engineering Corporation, Norway’s Getec AS, and Australia’s Fortescue to support its green hydrogen plans.
