Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister and Guntur District in-charge Minister Kandula Durgesh, currently on an official visit to London, has reviewed the food poisoning incident at SRM University–AP, located near Mangalagiri in Guntur district.
Expressing deep concern over reports that hundreds of students took ill after consuming food in the university hostels, the Minister has directed District Collector Tamim Ansari to conduct a detailed probe from multiple angles.
The incident reportedly occurred on 3 November, when a large number of students staying in the university hostels complained of nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain after dinner.
University authorities immediately rushed several students to nearby private hospitals and government healthcare facilities. Preliminary medical reports cited suspected food contamination as the cause.
According to district health officials, over 200 students were treated for symptoms of food poisoning. Most were discharged within 24 hours, while a few remained under observation. The Guntur District Medical and Health Department collected food and water samples from the university kitchens for laboratory analysis.
Minister Durgesh, after being briefed on the situation, instructed the Collector to ensure a transparent, multi-departmental inquiry involving the Health, Food Safety, and Higher Education departments. He also asked the government-appointed inquiry committee to identify any lapses in hostel kitchen management, food procurement, or sanitation practices.
Meanwhile, the district administration has directed SRM University to temporarily suspend kitchen operations until the results of the food safety tests are received. Alternative food arrangements have been made through certified external caterers.
Parents and student representatives have demanded stricter hygiene monitoring and regular inspections of campus dining facilities. Officials have decided that Food Safety Department will now conduct periodic checks at all large educational institutions in the Guntur–Amaravati region.
All the affected students were reported to be in stable condition. The official inquiry report is expected to be submitted to the state government within the next few days.
