Narsipatnam TDP MLA Ch Ayyanna Patrudu tipped to become Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Assembly

A six-time MLA from the same constituency— Ayyanna Patrudu is expected to be elected to the speaker's post by the Assembly on 21 June.

With the newly elected Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly set to meet for the first time on 21 June, TDP Narsipatnam MLA Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu’s candidature for the post of Speaker has more or less been finalized.

TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu is understood to be favouring his candidature, considering his service to the party.

A six-time MLA from the same constituency— Ayyanna Patrudu’s election to speaker’s post is expected to take place when the Assembly meets on 21 June, for two days.

Ayyanna Patrudu belongs to the Velama community, a backward caste in Andhra Pradesh. He won the Assembly election from Narsipatnam with a majority of over 24,676 votes, defeating his YSRCP Rival Petla Umashanker Ganesh.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the NDA registered a massive victory with 165 seats of the 175-seat assembly.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP won 11 seats.

Pro-tem speaker

The TDP has reportedly decided to favour senior most legislator Gorantal Butchaiah Chowdary to act as the pro-tem speaker.

He won the election to the Assembly from the Rajamahendravaram Rural segment, defeating his YSRCP rival Chelluboina Gopalakrishna with a margin of 64,090 votes.

Butchaiah Chowdray has been with the party since its foundation in 1982. He won the assembly elections seven times in a row.

AP Governor Abdul Nazeer will administer the oath to Buthcaiah Chowdary as the pro-tem speaker on 20 June. He will in turn administer oath to the elected MLAs, including those belonging to the Opposition YSRCP on 21 June.

According to sources, another senior leader Dhulipala Narendra Kumar is likely to be appointed as government chief whip.

He won from Ponnur in the erstwhile Guntur district, defeating his YSRCP rival Ambati Murali Krishna with a majority of 32,915 votes. A five-time MLA and Chandrababu Naidu loyalist, Murali Krishna won all the elections from 1994 till 2024 except in 2019.
